Couple donate 3 condos
Fletcher and Leila Sheriff are in their 80s and recently found themselves with a few extra real estate investments on their hands. Tired of renting them out, the Cocoa couple decided to donate three Melbourne condos to the Women's Center. "This is a good tax write-off for us and it should encourage other people to do the same thing," said Fletcher Sheriff, a partner in S & S Enterprises. The units were recently appraised at $85,000 apiece. Sheriff said he and his wife decided on the Women's Center after receiving advice from their attorney. "I talked with my wife and she thought it was ideal," he said. The Women's Center houses women and children who are homeless or in danger of becoming homeless. Some are also the victims of domestic violence. Center Director Jenny Gessler said they are grateful for the Sheriff's generosity. "Oh my gosh, it was a Godsend," Gessler said. "There's thousands of homeless in Brevard and we always have a waiting list, so this was a way for us to get more people into safe and affordable housing." Sheriff said he wants victims of domestic violence to know one thing: "Don't give up hope because there's people who certainly sympathize with them and would like to help."
